Cultural Doll Project
Objective:
Students will explore and appreciate all the many things that make families and their cultures special.
Task:
1. Cut out a silhouette for your doll in cardboard.
·Use the silhouette provided for your cutting. Cut it out and trace it on the back of a cereal box.
2. Create a face on another piece of paper and glue it to your doll.
·Don’t forget to color your face in. Remember to use “real” skin colors.
·Don’t forget to give yourself some hair; you’re not bald!
3. Use fabric or paper to create a traditional costume of your culture for your doll.
·If you don’t know about the traditional costume of your culture, visit a library to consult a book or use the Internet to look it up.
4. Find out about the popular colors, design elements, patterns and how they hold the clothes on the body. (Buttons? Sashes? Holes?) Write down these typical features on an index card. This will be displayed with your doll.
·For example: Red and gold are popular colors in the Chinese Culture. They use dragons, emblems and other intricate drawings on silk. They button the clothes with a little ball of thread that they pass through a loop.
5. Bring it to school and present it on Friday, September 19th
·Practice your presentation at home. Hint: Write down what you are going to say on a piece of paper.
·Remember, your project will be displayed so try your best and be creative!
